Tanner Children’s Dance Theater
Salt Lake City, Utah
The building confirms extensions of the body yet is subordinate to the activities held therein. This is a building whose presence is known and perceived upon arrival yet recedes as the children take possession of its internal spaces. Unlike a building for a professional ballet company, with its discrete and perfected spaces, this building invites dance of all forms in its corridors, staircases, and dressing rooms. Chalk, ribbons and costumes are central props that are most immediate as objects to determine a narrative for path-finding and choreography. The building provides cast shadows and cropped views that focus attention as the passage of the sun across a wall and a graceful weathered surface induce the formation of childhood memory.
